Codemasters and Formula1 Extend Contract Till 2025

Publishers of the F1 2019 have extended their contract with Formula1 till 2025 with an option to further extend the deal to two more years to Codemasters.
Codemasters has been developing the game for the longest time while holding the license to produce a simulation of the actual Formula1 racing. Few in the history of the F1 game series have had the opportunity to make the official F1 game. The extension after 2025 could take place depending on how well the game performs.
F1 Game Developers Over The Years
In the past, game publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Sony Studio Liverpool have all developed F1 games. However, they were not provided the luxury to develop the game for more than five consecutive years whereas Codemasters has already completed 10 years of developing the official F1 game. Many gamers argue it lacks the physics to produce a reality-based crash among other obvious flaws. One publisher that was expected to take over was none other than EA Sports. Mastering the art of making revolutionary games, EA Sports ranks among the elite gaming publishers having titles like FIFA and Need for Speed right under their belt.
Comparing NFS to F1

Need for Speed is one of the most prominent game series to get the attention of racing fans. Nowadays, they might have lost some of what makes this game so special. But special it was when Need for Speed Most Wanted arrived back in 2005. The game was revolutionary for simulating a lot of the real-world physics we had seen in any game before. From the nitrous blur to leaving the cops behind, the game had everything you wanted from a fast car racing game.
Many other racing games that came after 2005 copied most of the features introduced in the game. Even today, race fans play that game just to remind themselves of how good the racing can get if programmed right. Unfortunately, other titles that followed NFS MW did not become as successful. Maybe that is why F1 decided to go for Codemasters who during 2009 helped publish Ashes Cricket 2009.
What If EA Developed the F1 Game?
The last F1 game to be made by EA came around 2002. It was called F1 2002. This game scored a 9.3 IGN rating on the PC platform which is pretty impressive. The most shocking thing of all is that EA had a lot of sports games that they were published between 2000 and 2010 and F1 slipped from their fingers. If we look at some of the current EA games, UFC in particular, we can easily spot the physics are of the highest level, the experience is smooth and it gives you a good deal of control over how your character can develop. If we compare that to Codemasters F1 2019, there is not that much of a control, it lacks in graphics and does seem a bit clunky.
F1 2019 Quite Popular
At the same time, F1 2019 is currently one of the most popular games in the world. F1 2019 has allowed people to relax in their homes and drive F1 cars while fighting the coronavirus. Many gaming celebrities have started participating in tournaments around F1 2019. Therefore, we cannot argue with the popularity of the game. Lando Norris is leading the real F1 drivers to appreciate the game to its fullest. In addition to that, F1 itself has decided to host a Virtual Grand Prix Series during the long hiatus that the F1 and other sporting enterprises are experiencing nowadays. Quite remarkably, people at home have tuned in to watch the F1 gaming competition and followed it like it is an actual F1 Grand Prix.
Arguments Against the Extension
The only argument against the deal struck by both parties is that there are a lot of other developers out there. Formula1 should have given them the opportunity to write the games after 2021. There could not have been better timing for a change in the developers of the game with new regulations just around the corner. Instead, F1 chose to partner with Codemasters. It happened so because Formula1 had a good work relationship with them and they did not like the idea of speculating. Secondly, they do believe Codemasters have something good to offer them in terms of performance and technology going forward. So, maybe it was the right decision after all.
Although, in the past, game series choosing developers other than EA have found less innovation and more popularity. That is the way things are and we cannot do anything about that. Electronic Arts had its own share of struggles. So, it was all good in the end.
Other than EA, there are developers to have made racing games and done a remarkable job. The Crew developed by Ubisoft is probably one of the good racing games in recent years. That said, the finest job in the world of simulated racing has to be NFS MW developed by EA. But let’s not take the spotlight away from the Codemasters who have successfully extended their contract until 2025. This is a remarkable achievement. May they continue to produce the finest F1 games in the future.
