Briatore reckons Michael Schumacher had it tougher than Hamilton

Flavio Briatore thinks both of the drivers are great but Michael Schumacher had to face real competition from other drivers to secure his title. Lewis Hamilton could equal the title win tally of Michael Schumacher in 2020.
Briatore was Benetton Team Principal during Schumacher’s first two F1 championship wins. “Michael was fighting with big guys,” in his opinion. He is not wrong. Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and many others were fighting for the championship and they were all excellent drivers. Hamilton – and this has been said by many F1 analysts many times – is not pressurized enough. There might be two or three drivers who put the pressure on Hamilton.
The former Renault Team Principal echoed his beliefs about who are the real ‘stars’ in Formula 1 right now. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are currently the very best. Although, Charles Leclerc is also getting better with time. Soon, he would be sitting on the same table as Hamilton and Verstappen. Like most F1 analysts, Briatore resented the fact that Ferrari took so long to replace Raikkonen with whom “you’re going nowhere” Leclerc is strong, sharp and knows how to put the pressure on the drivers. His key attributes are noticeable in his overtaking.
Comparing Verstappen and his father Jos was out of the question for Briatore who said he wished Jos’s son [Max Verstappen] was “in the car and not you [Jos]!” Clearly, it was a joke appreciating Verstappen’s driving. In the years to come, Leclerc and Verstappen could become the new F1 rivals. Not all of it depends on them though. They need fast cars backed by intelligent constructors if they are to win anything in Formula 1.
